The development & the future of AVCHD

Capture every memorable moment of life with a powerful camera. Maybe it is a dream most of us have, with the development of the technology and society. Panasonic HDC-SDT750 comes into being which is the first 3D DV camera  in the world. In addition to shoot 3D images, it can also take 1080p and 60fps Full HD AVCHD format video. While what do you know about AVCHD? Following this paper, we will give you a deeper introduction about it.

AVCHD is a file-based format for the recording and playback of high-definition video dvelopped jointly by Sony and Panasonic for use in high definition consumer camcorders. As we all know, AVCHD standard based on MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video encoding, supports 480i, 720p, 1080i, 1080p format, and supports 5.1-channel Dolby digital AC-3 or linear PCM 7.1-channel audio compression. With it, we can store video on DVD discs, hard disk drives, non-removable solid-state memory, and removable flash memory such as Secure Digital and Memory Stick cards.

Along with the big screen high-definition television more and more into the home, home video camera is also faced with hd upgrade requirements. For Japan's leading consumer electronic equipment manufacturers, the upgrade to high definition has become an inevitable trend. Though they have introduced a variety of high-definition camera, including VD-ROM, Mini DV tape and flash memory cards, these efforts could backfire. Because the format is not compatible between each other, which will drag suppliers and consumers into confusion inevitably. Untill AVCHD who combine the existing structure of DVD and the advanced codec based on h.264 compression technique appears, it have solved most of the  problem.

There exists some difference between AVCHD and other formats. It integrates the HDV emerged in 2003, based on Mini DV tape and the new method to store video content into SD  card. Now leaflets can store about 20 minutes of high-resolution video content with a Mini DVD AVCHD discs just have 8 cm. What's more, double-layer and double-sided discs can store more than 1 hour. While, the mini-DVD discs without the AVCHD encoding can only store the generally 480i video content for about 30 minutes.

In addition to the existing advantage, sony may give us more surprises so that AVCHD can  have more developments and be widely used in future.  Some people expected that SONY will release A77, NEX-7 and VG20 supporting new AVCHD 2.0 standard. Does it mean that a new powerful video recording capabilities will emerge? I think that still needs further information to determine.
